Six Sigma certification is a guarantee issued to individuals within a company trained in Six Sigma or to the company itself using the methodology. Developed by Motorola in the 1980s, quality improvement programs are used by many companies and are accredited upon completion of educational programs offered by several schools. The Six Sigma certification borrows rankings from martial arts such as champion, master black belt, black belt and green belt for individuals.

Green belts are trained in mechanics and are the workers who do most of the work.

You must also demonstrate the ability to understand the values and processes involved in Six Sigma certification. A green belt works under a black belt, but may not always be assigned to a project. Black Belts are trained to explain the philosophy and principles of Six Sigma and are required to lead certain projects full-time. In addition to knowledge of the green belt, a black belt is required to master the application of the system to create and modify projects. They are usually assigned to spend at least 75% of their work schedule on the projects they are assigned to work on.

A Six Sigma Master Black Belt is an individual with additional experience and training who oversees several projects or serves as a coach for a black belt. This Six Sigma certification relates to statistical analysis and development of the procedural element of the project. A master black belt can oversee multiple projects and the black belts assigned to those projects.

Champions are usually designated by companies using the Six Sigma program and are responsible for overseeing all related projects. It is usually a master black belt chosen by management based on experience and education. Champion Six Sigma certification is offered by several vendors, but there is no official standard for that certification.

Six Sigma was a very popular concept in the 1990s when Motorola, Honeywell and General Electric succeeded in generating billions of dollars in revenue using this process. Higher ranked belts and champions are not too easily lent for formal implementation by small businesses as they are fully committed to their functioning within the program. Therefore, positions that require Six Sigma certification are typically found in large enterprises or organizations.
